After a couple weeks pondering about it, I finally switched the alternator on my 1997 Defender 300Tdi and now it looks like I made the wrong choice even after thinking about it that long... I've got no power at all. The battery is going strong, but no dash lights, no ignition, basically NOTHING works. I thought the new alternator might be the problem, but even after reinstalling the old one, it's still completely dead. I know what you're thinking but no, I already checked all fuses and grounds. How can I go about it?

Alternator swap killed power

Sorry to hear, that's a bummer!
Since you've checked fuses and grounds and even swapped the alternator back, I would suspect it's a main power feed issue before anything gets to the dash or ignition.
Double-check the main battery terminals and the cable leading from the battery to the starter solenoid, and then from the solenoid to the rest of the electrical system.
Even a seemingly good connection can fail internally.
Also, take a close look at the main fusible link or circuit breaker, if your Defender has one in that main power line.
It's easy to overlook and would cause exactly these symptoms.

Tough one to crack thats for sure, could be a failed ignition switch, a bad main relay or a damaged fusible link near the battery. Start by tracing power from the battery to the ignition and see where it's getting lost
