Is 2.8L the limit for this block?

Quick question, been going down the rabbit hole of engine builds lately and got bit by the bug after helping a buddy rebuild his setup and I keep circling back to the 2.8L conversion. I know it involves swapping in a new crank, rods, and pistons, but Im curious... is 2.8 liters really the max displacement you can squeeze out of this block?

yeah, for the Tdi block, 2.8L is pretty much the sweet spot. Anything more and you're basically thinning the cylinder walls to Swiss cheese or getting into seriously custom, bank-breaking territory. It's the king for a reason!

well, in a practical sense, yes, 2.8L is about as big as you can reliably go with that block. The 2.8L kit from International is a well engineered package that uses a new crank, rods, and pistons to increase the displacement without compromising the block's integrity.
you could theoretically bore it out a little more, but you start running into issues with cylinder wall thickness and block strength, which can lead to a less reliable engine down the road. like the @TorqueVeteran said, the 2.8L is the sweet spot
 
I wondered the same thing when I first looked into that build. The 2.8L is about the practical limit for that block, any bigger and you start running into cylinder wall thickness and reliability issues. Some folks push it further with sleeving, but it's not really worth the trade-offs for a streetable engine.
 
2.8L is usually the limit if you don't want to do a lot of machine work. You might get to 3.0L+ if you use aftermarket sleeves, but it depends on the block. Some blocks can handle a bigger bore because they have thicker walls, but others tap out at 2.8L
